I've kept up to date in my Psalms & Proverbs. I'm on track to finish Revelation by the end of the month and 1 Kings and maybe Judges :-).

Josuha 23
6: Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is
written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside
therefrom to the right hand or to the left;
7: That ye
come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make
mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither
serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:
8: But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.
I should finish that book tomorrow. I've also been staying on schedule for Psalms & Proverbs and just started Revelation. I should finish Revelation by the end of the month and may even be able to play catch-up on some of the small NT books I skipped earlier this year (Galatians, Ephesians, James, 1 & 2 Thessalonians I believe ... my schedule's in the car :-)). My plan for the rest of the month is to stay up to date and finish Joshua & maybe Judges as catch-up for the OT.

This jumped out at me this morning:

1 Chronicles 21:24 And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

I like how King David is saying that it should cost us something when we give to the Lord.Becca Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17832010333831438408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5740929099494624166.post-47077210018968679982012-06-11T05:46:00.000-07:002012-06-11T05:46:56.245-07:00no blogging over the weekend :-)I babysat my 3 yr old nephew this weekend, so I didn't get a chance to jump on here. Since I last blogged, I've stayed up to date on my daily proverbs, read several chapters in Psalms (I think I'm up to 134 or 135), read several small books in the New Testament (2/3 John, Jude, 1/2 Peter, 2 Tim and some others) and started 1 Chronicles. We have a tent revival this week at church, so I'm not sure how much extra reading I'll do this week. I may actually have time to do more as I'll have a bit of down time between work and the tent revival, but we'll see.

1 Chronicles 5:20 stood out to me this morning:
20: And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were
delivered into their hand, and all that were with them: for they cried
to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them; because they put
their trust in him.Becca Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17832010333831438408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5740929099494624166.post-20295847591705500482012-06-06T13:02:00.002-07:002012-06-06T13:02:32.388-07:00finished 1 SamuelDidn't get to blog yesterday, but I've finished 1 Samuel and 1Timothy :-)Becca Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17832010333831438408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5740929099494624166.post-65172260599581043592012-06-04T05:58:00.000-07:002012-06-04T05:58:29.673-07:00Proving Your ArmourThis morning I read 1 Samuel 14 - 17, my daily Proverb, and a few chapters in Psalms. This stood out to me in 1 Samuel 17:

38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.
Have a happy Wednesday! I'm looking forward to keeping my little ones in the nursery tonight :-).Becca Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17832010333831438408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5740929099494624166.post-61552730896619518822012-05-22T04:28:00.000-07:002012-05-22T04:28:10.097-07:00Acts 25 - 26Today I enjoyed reading Acts 25 & 26. I realized that I should live my life so that even if men may accuse me of crimes that they may not be able to prove them. 25:7 says "And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove." Additionally, 25:25 says "But when I [Festus] found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.

Yet at the same time if I do wrong, I should be willing to accept my punishment:
Verse 25:11 says "For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worth of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man my deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Cesar.

I also realized that I should not live my life according to a religion but instead live my life according to Jesus. Paul says in 26:4-5 "My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews; Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee." After describing his encounter on the road to Damascus, he says in vs. 19-20 "Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem and throughout all the coasts of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance." After his encounter with the Lord, Paul stopped persecuting the believers and followed after Jesus himself, no matter the cost. I need to do the same.

This brings to mind the sermon Preacher gave Sunday night during our tent service. The key verse was Luke 9:2 - "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." A disciple of Christ needs to decide (if ... will) to direct his life after Jesus (come after me ... follow me), deny himself, and die to self (take up his cross) daily. I wrote this phrase on my mirror so I can see it every day. Good news is that I've completed all assignments for school, so that's one less thing on my plate.

My church is in the midst of our fall program. This year's theme is "Who is My Neighbor?" All adult/teen Sunday School classes are teaching similar lessons during the program. This week's lesson focused on who the three people were in the Good Samaritan parable.

I'm sure many of you are familiar with this parable. A man was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell among thieves and was left for dead. Three people saw him - the first two passed by while the 3rd one had compassion and helped him.

What struck me this morning was the difference between "saw" and "look".
From Luke 10:

[31] And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
[32] And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
[33] But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
definitions from Google:

to see: perceive by sight or have the power to perceive by sight; "You have to be a good observer to see all the details"; "Can you see the bird in that tree?"; "He is blind--he cannot see"

to look: perceive with attention; direct one's gaze towards; "She looked over the expanse of land"; "Look at your child!"; "Look--a deer in the backyard!"
When "to see" is used, you are seeing by sight - something catches your eye. When "to look" is used, you are purposely, with attention, seeing something with your sight.

With these two definitions in mind, this is what I realized during the lesson:

The Priest saw the man, but paid him no attention.

The Levite saw the man, came to purposely see with attention, but decided not to help.

The Samaritan saw the man and decided to help, without considering the situation or if the man were worthy of help.

So how do you see? Do you see things out of the corner of your eye, like the Priest, but continue on your way. Do you come take a closer look, but like the Levite, decide to continue on your way? Or do you see something and, like the Samaritan, decide to do what you can, without consideration to the situation?

BeccaBecca Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17832010333831438408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5740929099494624166.post-37741511920370504782010-07-17T08:38:00.000-07:002010-07-17T08:55:47.534-07:00Meaning of NamesThis weeks WOTB devotion talks about the meaning of names (because God changed Sarai to Sarah)

Rebecca: to bind, to tie, snare, captivating, beautiful, faithful one, servant of God.

Interesting. Our theme is "I Love America." I am working in crafts and my group has 3/4 yr. old boys & girls and 5/6 & 7/8 yr. old girls.

Monday night we made paper windsocks. We let the kids decorate long sheets of construction paper (like 11 X 17, I think). The older girls glued on shapes one of the other crafters cut out with her cricut. The 3/4's colored theirs with markers. When the kids were done decorating the tube, we tape strips of crepe paper to the bottom of the back of the sheet of construction paper. We then rolled the construction paper into a tube and taped it secure. We punched two holes at the top, across from each other, and looped ribbon through for the handle. We had 54 that night - 31 big girls and 23 3/4 boys/girls.

Tonight (Tuesday) we had 71. Ahead of time we made frames out of Popsicle sticks and school glue, included a ribbon, and tied a plain white sheet of paper to the back side of the frame. The kids decorated their paper and then glued tissue paper to the frame. The kids did pretty well at it. We had 9 tables tonight but about 20 workers, so it was not bad.

I'll get pictures of the samples and post tomorrow when I share what we did.

I'm glad school supply sales started - it made for cheap VBS supplies (glue/crayons/markers).

BeccaBecca Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17832010333831438408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5740929099494624166.post-24428437415304218932010-07-12T04:03:00.000-07:002010-07-12T04:04:45.757-07:00Women in ProverbsAs I read through Proverbs this month, I'm going to note everywhere a woman is mentioned, whether it is an example of something I should be or an example of something I should not be. I want to share some thoughts:

3. The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much win, teachers of good things;
4. That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5. To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

I'm a young woman, but eventually I'll be an aged woman. To teach all these things then, they are things I need to learn NOW.

Over the next few weeks I plan on taking each trait and studying it further to see what it really means and what are the other examples of that trait in the Bible.

BeccaBecca Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17832010333831438408noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5740929099494624166.post-37399446678052567262010-07-07T19:15:00.000-07:002010-07-07T19:18:14.443-07:00If you died today, where would you go?This is taken from my quilting blog. I posted it last August (2009) after a man from our church was killed in a triathlon. My Sunday School teacher was participating in the same event and was only five minutes or so ahead of his friend when the accident happened....

If you died today, where would you go? This question is very relevant today in light of a man named John Carr. He and his family attended our church a few years ago, before switching to a church closer to their home. They were very active in our church and maintained relationships with several families here. Their two older children attend our Bible college.

Yesterday (Saturday, August 1), he and my Sunday School teacher were participating in a triathlon in Louisville, KY. Without warning, during the bicycle portion of the race, Bro. Carr was struck from behind by a drunk driver. He died at the scene. No one ever expected a death to occur during this race. It has been run nearly 30 years without serious incident. Bro. Carr had no time to react, no warning that he was about to be killed. One moment he was riding his bicycle, the next, stepping into eternity. His eternity is Heaven. Many years ago he trusted Jesus as his Saviour. He knew where he was headed.

If you have never trusted Jesus as your Saviour, now is the time to do so. None of us know how much time we have left to live. Any moment we could be killed, be it by a drunk driver, a stray bullet, a heart attack. If it had been you on that bicycle, where would you now be for eternity? Do you even know? Would you be in Heaven or would you be in Hell? You can know that you'll be in Heaven. It's your choice, your decision. Only you can make it for yourself. No one can decide for you and you decide for no one. Make it now, for your death may come just as suddenly and without warning as Bro. Carr's did.

1. Know that you are a sinner. The Bible says in Romans 3:23 - "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." and in Romans 3:10 - "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:"
2. Know that there is a sin-debt that must be paid. Romans 6:23(a) - "For the wages of sin is death;" and Revelation 20:14-15 - " "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.""
3. Jesus paid the sin-debt for us. Romans 6:23 - "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." and Romans 5:8 - "But God commendeth His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." and John 14:6 - "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
4. Anyone can trust Jesus as his/her Saviour Romans 10:9 - "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." and Romans 10:13 - "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." John 5:24 - "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."

If you would like to accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour, simply bow your head and humbly:

1. Admit to God that you are a sinner.
2. Tell Him you believe Jesus died for you.
3. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins and save your soul.
4. Then believe that He promised to save you.

Don't wait until it's too late to make this decision. You never know what waits around the corner for you. It's your choice - your decision. Make it now.

BeccaBecca Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17832010333831438408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5740929099494624166.post-36045937231245386722010-07-07T19:06:00.000-07:002010-07-07T19:07:31.678-07:00Proverbs 7I was reading in Proverbs 7 this morning and noticed something.

7 And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,
8 Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,
9 In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:
10 And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:
12 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
14 I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
15 Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.
16 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.
19 For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:
20 He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.
21 With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.
22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;
23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.
(I bolded for emphasis)

I've read this passage several times over the years and haven't given it much thought. This morning I realized that if we put ourselves in the wrong place at the wrong time (vs. 8/9), then the decision's been made. (vs. 13/21). The harlot caught him, she caused him to yield, she forced him. The young man didn't choose to go with the harlot. He chose to make himself available to her. Applying this to my life, I see that it is even more important that I watch where I go places and when I go places. Even if I have no intentions of sinning, if I put myself in the wrong place at the wrong time, I may get caught up in the sin and not have a choice. It will find me. (vs. 15).

BeccaBecca Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17832010333831438408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5740929099494624166.post-25407244452050719992010-07-07T18:55:00.000-07:002010-07-07T19:06:02.956-07:00Women of the Bible - Wk 1 - EveWeek 1 is about Eve. So far the Lord has shown me three things.

1. God tells Adam, when referring to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, "thou shalt not eat of it:" (Gen. 2:16). He does not say "thou shalt not touch of it." The serpent asks Eve "yeah, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" (Gen. 3:1) But Eve adds to her answer. She says, "God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it" (Gen. 3:3). Where does this touching come from? From what's recorded in the Bible, God never said, don't touch. He only said don't eat. Did Adam add to God's command or did Eve embellish the command? What is the significance of this?

2. Coat vs. apron & skins vs. fig leaves .... Adam and Eve made aprons of fig leaves for themselves, but God made them coats out of skins. When reading this passage I always focused on the difference between the aprons and the coats (i.e., coats cover more), but this time it dawned on me that there is also a difference between fig leaves and skins. Blood had to be shed for the skins to be obtained. To me this foreshadows Cain and Abel. The fig leaves were not enough for a covering; otherwise God would have made the coat of them.

3. Abel - the devotional pointed out that Abel means temporal. Cain means possession. Just an interesting fact :-)

BeccaBecca Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17832010333831438408noreply@blogger.com0
